Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro Toro Especial is the latest cigar to join the highly acclaimed Herrera Esteli lineup from Drew Estate. Released in 2018, Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro follows the original Herrera Esteli blend and Herrera Esteli Norteno, both highly-rated cigars and both cigars which have earned spots on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 list. That being said, any new addition to the lineup would have some big shoes to fill, but Willy Herrera was more than confident in blending this dazzling Brazilian Maduro blend. Made in Nicaragua, Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro consists of a stout blend of Nicaraguan filler tobacco and a robust Connecticut Broadleaf binder. What really makes the blend interesting, however, is the use of a plantation grown Brazilian Mata Fina wrapper leaf. This type of leaf is rarely used as the outer layer of a cigar and is more popularly used as a filler component or even a binder in some cases. However, Willy Herrera desired to “bring the Mata Fina to the forefront of the blend,” thus ending up with an end result that is bold, interesting, and mysteriously intriguing. Apparently the blend works, as it recently received a 90-rating in Cigar Aficionado.

Boasting all-new packaging that “combines classic Cuban style with modern simplicity,” as Herrera notes, this particular cigar could not have a more fitting theme. Blue and white on gold denotes the blend, as opposed to the standard red on white bands worn by the original blend. Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro is unusually well-crafted, offering a crisp burn and easy draw, despite the interesting choice of wrapper leaf. Thick clouds of dense, white smoke massage the palate with an early storm of black pepper. Cedar and cocoa soon take over, as the earthy spiciness continues throughout the smoke. Hints of sweetness appear along the way, and the finish is clean, yet intensely peppery. A faint coffee note hangs in the background as the cigar burns down, but the main theme is pepper and sweetness. Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro is a solid medium-full-bodied cigar from beginning to end, and beautifully balanced. One of the more popular sizes in the lineup, the Toro Especial is 6” x 52, offering a long, cool, easy smoke with an abundance of flavor nuances.

It’s well-known that when Drew Estate releases a non-flavored premium cigar, beginners need not apply. This particular collaboration with Willy Herrera, like the first two Herrera Esteli brands, is intended for experienced connoisseurs. The flavor profile is medium-full-bodied and complex, pairing beautifully with bourbon, scotch, or a dark beer. Strong coffee also makes a great companion to this cigar, though the blend may be a bit bold as a morning smoke for some. Although Liga Privada No. 9 doesn’t use the same type of wrapper leaf as Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro, its flavor profile and construction compare quite well to the cigar in question, so if you have tried a No. 9 and loved it, this is likely a stick for you. “Combining classic Cuban style with modern simplicity.” Willy Herrera couldn’t have hit the nail any better than that. Give Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro Toro Especial a shot and experience the passion, expertise, and ingenuity of one of the best collaborations in the cigar business.
