An ultra-premium in every sense, the Ashton Estate Sun Grown (ESG) 20 Year Salute cigar was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ashton brand and represents the best of the cigar-making craft. The pinnacle of a collaborative effort between tobacconist Robert Levin and Tabacalera Fuente, it contains a unique blend of artfully aged tobaccos from the Dominican Republic. But what makes this cigar special is the wrapper, culled from only the highest primings of plants located within the Chateau de la Fuente estate and grown only for the ESG in very limited quantities.
The highly stylized band of the Ashton ESG 20 Year Salute adds glamor to an appearance otherwise in need of little enhancement. Minimal veining adds texture to a flawless, chewy leaf that exudes scents of spice and peat. The first few puffs deliver wood and coffee notes in a balanced and smooth manner, with a sweet caramel added into the first third. The taste shifts to spice and almond as the smoke progresses, the salt and pepper ash is somewhat flaky but strong. The final third of the cigar is a crescendo of flavors, heavily influenced by the return of the caramel now toasted to a crisp toffee.
Priced for special occasions, the 6” ¾ x 50 Ashton Estate Sun Grown 20 Year Salute will be hard to resist even after a lunch of burgers and fries on the patio of the local country club, but having a box available in the humidor will make it easier to indulge for even the most mundane of celebrations. A medium to full cigar on par with the Arturo Fuente Opus X or Padron Anniversary 1964, it will delight even the most jaded of cigar aficionados.
